In the middle of Harvard Square, staying in the Charles Hotel is always a treat. Henrietta’s Table is the focal point of casual dining in the hotel.

Gustaf Anders

Santa Ana, CA

Continental

RIP

Our rating: 4 forks

01/01/2004 Closed. This Scandinavian restaurant is worthy. A wonderful kitchen serves American, Continental, and Swedish specialties that are sure to warm your soul. Order the Swedish meatballs with lingon berry sauce, steak tartar, roasted pork or lamb, and gravlax.

They have a wonderful Smorgasbord on Mother's day, Fathers Day, and Easter Sundays. It is also served from the Tuesday after Thanksgiving through the end of the year.

Wood burning oven turns out fine rotisserie chicken, and gourmet pizza's with a flair. They also serve the Swedish national drink, Aquavit which they say perfectly complements the herring (some may find it a necessity).

All of the breads are baked on premises. The decor is reminiscent of Swedish sensibilities, both contemporary and warm.

Sally's Restaurant and Deli

Sally's serves up some of the best breakfasts and lunches in San Francisco. Daily specials are always creative and tasty. Sandwiches are served on great breads and , like all their entree salads, fresh ingredients. Their bakery next door serves up bread, pastries and desserts to go.

Sally's is just South from the heart of the city, so it isn't always convenient for breakfast before a visit to the convention or downtown business but worth the trip.

Our rating: 1 fork

Chimayo started as a great idea, with David Whilhelm as executive chef, they served great Southwest cuisine. And though the food can be quite good, now it seems overpriced, and has inconsistent service.

Nonetheless, their seared Ahi tuna rolls, and grilled fish plates are excellent. They have a good wine list, a large selection of tequila, and it is conveniently located around the corner from the "Apple Store"!

Finally a great breakfast spot in central Orange county! What makes a great breakfast? Friendly service, fresh orange juice, excellent baked goods, and great atmosphere. Try the Eggs Florentine poached eggs servers over wonderful bacon, steamed spinach, tomato on top of an English muffin, or for lunch, their namesake burger served with bacon and avocado. The portions are hearty and I rarely have room for dessert, at least immediately after my meal. Translation: I will often take a brownie, or a slice of wonderful apple pie to go.

This page provides locals with eatery opinions different from that of an industry insider or "trained" food critic, whatever that means. These reviews are simply the opinions of a Seattlite who loves good food, and would generally rather experience someplace new and different than visit a few favorite restaurants repeatedly. My thoughts are not complicated by my perceived political standing in the dining restaurant community nor fear of offending an advertiser.

A good sandwich shop or lunch counter is almost impossible to find in Orange County. The best little lunch counter around is Ivy's - quick service, varied menu, fresh ingredients, and home style cooking. Chicken and vegetable soup is a must and is always on the menu along with a fresh made addition. Their 1/2 sandwich with soup or salad ($ 4.50) is about the best lunch bargain in town.

The Hobbit is a venerable institution in Orange County, serving seven course meals to a packed house almost nightly. Their menu entrees are published weeks in advance for convenience. On a recent visit our meal was as follows:

Champagne and hors d'oeuvres in the wine cellar where you choose your evenings wines (at additional cost of course) from their extensive collection.

Celery Root soup with Swiss Chard and Chanterelle Mushrooms Thyme Roasted Duck Breast with lingonberry conserve Baby romaine and Radicchio Salad

-intermission-

The standout dishes where the Lamb and the Duck Breast. From their wine cellar we had a 1994 Silver Oak Cabernet that was outstanding!

Pierpont's Union Station

Kansas City, MO

American

$20 to $30

Pierpont's is at the East end of the restored Union Station, and though I suspect is a relatively new addition, looks like has been a fixture since the 1920's. A great place to entertain clients, you won't be disappointed with the hearty portions and continental menu. I enjoyed the flash fried calamari served atop "crispy" spinach and spit roasted chicken Lyonnaise with mashed potatoes.

The St. Paul Grill

St. Paul, MN

American

$20 to $30

Our rating: 5 forks

The St. Paul Grill has the reputation as one of the best restaurants in America and I must agree. Superb atmosphere, attentive and friendly service, classic menu with flawless execution. In LA, the Grill is a enviable chop house, but even it doesn't compare to this Midwest landmark.

The glass of Blanton's Kentucky Bourbon may have got me off to a good start but the food keep me there. I had several of their signature dishes including a taste of three starters - bruschetta, pepper shrimp, and crab with artichoke spread with toast points. Either the Caesar salad or the chicken and rice soup would be a good choice to follow. The pan fried Walleye with butter cream sauce ($19) or the double cut pork chops with cinnamon apple sauce ($20) are both examples worthy of any table. The Walleye is a regional favorite and a native to The Great Lakes. Sides of Hash browns and the most magnificent cream spinach imaginable were shared and easily devoured. Other entrees include a variety of steaks and fresh seafood.

Their wine list is not extensive, but carefully populated with amazing and familiar names, mostly from California. We enjoyed the Turnbull 1998 Cabernet, and at $68 was a good buy.

Dessert time is when I am most happy to have a large group, in my recent dining at The St. Paul it was large enough to justify apple crisp with cinnamon ice cream, apple crisp with vanilla ice cream (we didn't think to just order a side of vanilla!), pecan flour less torte, and BANANA CREAM PIE. I capitalize this because it was the best example of BCP you could imagine.

Bon Appetite!

Hot Tamale Brown's Cajun Creole Food

Kansas City, MO

Cajun/Creole

What started in New Orleans in 1908, and later became a tradition there, is a blessing in Kansas City! Enjoy the limited but tasty Cajun Creole menu including standards like Gumbo, Red Beans and Rice, Jambalaya, Crawfish Etouffee, and New Orleans style coffee. The standout meal here is the Crawfish Chili and the Frosty Mint Lemonade! The Crawfish Chili ($8) is made with ground turkey, beef, vegetables, a blend of Cajun and Jamaican spices, and Crawfish tail meat - just delicious! <

They even have a drive through for year round convenience. This place is a modest one, and though it is comfortable at lunch, be cautious at night. p>The Hot Tamale Brown web site has an interesting story about the Brown family and their history.
